Public transportation benefits the community (November 16, 2012)

People want to "navigate" their community. We need locally and elsewhere to support the effort. Our goal must be sure not to isolate residents who are without the use of a car. Many have talents to offer and they can be productive in a job or do a job as a volunteer. All income levels of our population should have access to reliable and serviceable transportation. It will help the economy for people to be able to shop at the local businesses. …

Lobby health care officials for reform (September 21, 2012)

Let's question the system of the "insurance designers" and their plan of health management of the human being. Let's ask for the assurance of human insurance. The system is now designed to handle the person akin to a machine needing to be fitted with auto parts if it suits the mechanic. …

County needs better transport services (January 14, 2011)

How can you get health care if you can't get to health care? Access to preventive treatments for illness is ideal rather than playing catch-up after an illness is full blown. …

Better ideas needed for transportation (October 25, 2010)

Today, really look around you. Everything you see and use has been planned, planted, or conceived and exists due to efforts made by someone or a group working together. Ideas, plans and actions make things happen. Distance is covered and made accessible by the wheel, balloon, airplane, or a sea craft. These things did not happen overnight or from thin air. …

Seniors need help to avoid nursing homes (July 19, 2010)

For every person who remains out of a nursing home, $120,000 a year in taxpayers' money is saved, according to Mae Carpenter, director of Westchester's Department of Senior Programs and Services. Making transportation available in established suburban areas is a challenge. Seniors need and want to feel connected to the community. We need to offer options. …

Don't forget teeth in health debate (December 03, 2009)

When did our teeth become a separate part of the human anatomy? In the debate for health-care reform insurance, have we decided that body parts should each be given individual insurance? Without teeth, the rest of the body would have a difficult time developing or remaining in good health once removed from the mother's milk. Many people forgo semi-annual dental appointments due to their limited budgets. Specialization in the field of medicine has grown; however, insurance to itemize the individual segments of our bodies is unconscionable. …

Editorial Comment

Here’s a suggestion for you, Evelyn. Take the money that you would be paying for dental insurance, and put it in the bank. From what you’d save in premiums, it wouldn’t take you too long to save up $2,500 for that root-canal and crown. - BK

Needs of senior citizens must get consideration (February 28, 2009)

Each stage of life is important. The Elder Justice Act confronts elder abuse in the same ways we combat child abuse and violence against women. It has been delayed in Congress for more than five years. Abuse of our senior citizens can be physical, psychological or financial. …

Transportation vital for seniors and the ill (June 22, 2008)

Have you ever attended a dinner party and when the food is served, there is none for you? You sit and watch everyone enjoy the meal while your hunger gnaws at you. The senior citizen who no longer drives has that same gnawing sensation and even has to wait for the ride home to eat a can of beans. …

From the day we are born in the United States most of us get around on wheels - the bassinet, the baby carriage, the stroller, roller skates, tricycle, bicycle and then the train, bus, and, ultimately, the car. …
